SURFACE LANGUAGE

A monumental cruciform structure rises from the band of this hardware piece, the cross cast in solid oxidized silver with a stepped, architectural bezel frame that creates depth through layered recession. The cross arms terminate in squared, flared caps with a Gothic sensibility. The shoulders of the band bear deeply engraved scrollwork and lettering motifs including ''AE'' characters set within cartouche-like panels, the lines dark with oxidation. The entire surface carries a mottled patina of tarnish and wear, bright highlights on raised edges contrasting with shadowed recesses. The cross projects substantially from the finger, asserting its presence as a three-dimensional sculptural object rather than a flat appliqué.
