OBJECT STUDY

Ethiopian Coptic cross pendant in low-grade silver, double-sided, each face distinct in form and execution. The front face presents a compact cross with flared, notched terminals and diagonal hatching cut into each arm. Surface patina is uneven, warm silver-grey with darker oxidation pooling in the engraved recesses. Visible casting seams run along the lateral edges. The reverse face is markedly different: a larger, more elaborate form with pointed Gothic-style projections, Ge'ez script or symbolic markings pressed into the central field, and a heavily textured ground suggesting lost-wax casting. A double bail of polished, worn silver connects the two faces on a pivot, allowing the pendant to flip. The bail shows friction wear consistent with extended use. Rooted in the Ethiopian Orthodox craft tradition, Coptic crosses of this type were worn as personal devotional objects across Amhara and Tigrinya communities.
